Adopt A Tree

Nature Activities | 6-10 yrs | Reading Pod

Excerpt: Choose your favorite tree and journal its life and growth for the year.

In this adopt a tree activity, all you need to do is choose a tree that is close to home or even near school, study and journal its life for a year. You will find that just like us humans, each tree grows and changes in its own way.

After picking a tree that is to be studied, you must try and make sure that you are able to visit it at least once in a month. Carry a notebook with you to make a diary of the tree’s life for the year. The next thing that you must do is identify what kind of tree it is. Look closely at the tree’s bark, leaves, if it has any fruits, flowers etc. You can also click a photo of it or draw its picture.

For the next one year, while visiting the tree at least once a month, make notes about what is happening in the life of the tree selected. Can you notice any growth? Did the tree lose all its leaves in winter? Does it produce flowers, fruits, seed pods? Does the tree show signs of stress during the hot summers. Do animals make homes in your tree?

Add a new picture every time you visit the tree. At the end of the year, you will have a complete report of your tree’s growth and life!
