A digital forensics expert is someone who analyses the different ways in which people use gadgetry and technology to commit crimes either in the real world and cyber space. Hina Dodia is one such person who has worked in multiple areas of digital forensics like corporate fraud, e-mail crimes, hacking, forgery, and cyber terrorism.
Hina also finds time to live in the real world through her many hobbies and social outlets. She is no stranger to the arts whether in the form of digital art, painting, and dance.

What kind of a student were you in school and college?
Well I was a very sincere, honest and intelligent student in my school days. In college I got a little naughty, but was one of those students who is equally interested in topping her studies and fulfilling her hobbies. At the same time I was very curious about the world around me.

Which teacher do you remember most and why?
Our Head of Department during my Master’s degree – Professor Sangalikar, he used to motivate and encourage the students in making their future bright and to be independent in life by acquiring knowledge.
When did you realize this is what you wanted to do?
I did my Masters in Computer Science and the first job, which I got through campus recruitment, was as a graphics programmer. I realized pretty soon that I just hate doing programming and decided that I am never going to work as programmer or developer of an application. Thus my primary focus/interest was not application development, but it was implementing application in real life and to reach to some conclusion by making smart use of application. I shifted to a digital forensics job because the use of a particular application which is already developed and good decision making skills were required.
If I want to do what you do, what do I have to do?
The basic requirement is Master’s degree in computers. After that you require specialized training in various techniques of digital forensic such as Cyber and Mobile device forensic, Voice identification and Video examination from some authentic expert. Generally there is government sector and private sector where you can work as Digital Forensic Expert. Initially I got recruited in Govt. sector where I acquired my specialized training and enough experience. There I also got opportunity on work on very high profile crime cases and presenting them in the court of law. Then I shifted to private sector where I worked on important corporate and financial Digital Forensic Cases.
What’s your typical day like?
My typical day starts with meeting a particular client, understanding the case history and working on the solution of the same. The rest of the time I spend with my family.
What did you do with your first paycheck?
I paid my father’s debts.
Name some joys of your profession.
Everyday teaches us something new. Every day I learn something new especially on latest frauds/crimes. I like to be up to date with latest information/fraud incidences going around the world.
Were you named after anyone?
I was named after a famous movie with Raj Kapoor called ‘Heena’.
What are some of your hobbies or passions?
Well I am great lover of all forms art. I am a national prize winner in drawing, so I love drawing, painting and making artistic rangoli designs. I am also a professional in applying bridal Mehendi design. Apart from that I am trained Kathak dancer.
What is the most thrilling experience in your life?
It was when I went for trekking to Lonavala with a couple of my friends. It was most thrilling as well as most horrid experience of my life. My shoes were torn during the trek. I tied it with handkerchief and I managed to travel with that defected pair of shoes.
What book are you reading right now?
I like reading all detective novels so currently I am reading one of the detective series of Dan Brown.
What is your animal spirit? Why?
I am very thin so I guess an ant is my animal spirit.
