Interview with Mary Kom
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom
MC Mary Kom or Magnificent Mary is the only Indian female boxer to have won the World Boxing Championship five times. She has also won the Bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics competing in the flyweight category.
She has also started the first Indian female fight club at Imphal. She teaches girls the techniques to defend themselves there.
Over to Mary Kom.
1. Why did you choose boxing?
On the suggestion of my athletics coach and the introduction of women’s boxing I changed my discipline from athletics to boxing. Boxing was more suited to my physical attributes and what I have always loved to do. I was also inspired to try harder and strive higher by the achievements of Muhammad Ali.
2. What is the best thing about your profession?
You have to take a punch on your face no matter you win or lose…. ha ha
3. Are you scared of opponents heavier than you?
It is all about techniques and tactics. If you stick to basics and are able to deal with your opponent accordingly, then there can be no fear.
4. What do you do if you run out of breath during a fight?
We prepare ourselves accordingly during training sessions, so no chance to run out of breath. If somehow we lose our breath, then we cannot survive a minute in the ring.
