Roger Federer : Profile and Biography

Roger Federer (1981 – ) is a tennis professional athlete and multi-world-record holder. The Swiss-born champion has been ranked in either first or second place in the year-end world tennis rankings for 8 years in a row. With a total of 4 Australian open wins, 1 French open win, 7 Wimbledon wins, and 5 US open winds, Roger Federer name is one that tennis players tremble to hear and youth from across the world aspire to be.

Federer was born in a small town near Basil, Switzerland called Binningen to a Swiss father and a South-African mother. He was first attracted to tennis when his childhood idol Boris Becker won his first title in 1985 and would watch televised tennis matches for long hours at a time.

Roger began playing tennis early and was among the top players amongst his peers from a very early age. He, along with childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli would often play other raquet sports like table tennis and squash and sometimes football but tennis was always their first love. Roger admits that any sport is always more interesting when there was a ball involved and uses games like cricket and basketball to tune his hand eye coordination and improve his tennis game.

By age 10, the extremely talented player began to take group lessons at The Old Boys Tennis Club. The coach and club saw so much potential in him that the club partly funded private lessons. Having outgrown the coach and club by age 14, he moved on to the Swiss National Tennis Centre where he received training that turned him into the pro he is today.

Roger Federer’s versatility on any surface whether clay, grass, or hardcourt along with a serve of over 200 km/hr have led him to the top and allowed him to remain there. His win at Wimbledon 2012 tied him with Pete Sampras’ record of winning 7 Wimbledon Titles and being on top of the seeded list for 268 weeks. After having won gold in Beijing in 2008 in the men’s doubles, will Federer take home Olympic gold again at London 2012?
