What kind of a student were you in school and college?

Other than my final year of high school, I was never top of the class but always above average. I was popular (notorious even) with the teachers and students alike. I was the kind of student who would always be found in the sports field.

And your favorite subjects?

Surprisingly, my favorite subjects were math and physics, unusual for someone who spent a lot of time practicing various sports.

Which teacher do you remember most and why?

Having spent a considerable amount of time in the field, I had a very close relationship with my cricket and basketball coaches. I learned a great deal from them. They always believed in me even when others had didn’t.

When did you realize this is what you wanted to do?

As a teenager, all I dreamed about was to become a professional sportsman. I soon came to realize that this wasn’t as easy as it seemed in my dream. The next best thing to playing professional sport is making it happen, behind the scenes. I learned about this industry while I was doing a summer internship during my second year of university. I happened to bump into a friend of mine from school, who was a few years ahead of me. He had been working for one of the leading sports marketing firms in the world and mentioned it to me. That is when I decided, I wanted to work in sports.

If I want to do what you do, what do I have to do?

Working is sports is like working in any other organization. You have to decide what field of sport you want to work in. I personally enjoy sport events and marketing. I studied Business Management during college and have a Masters in Sports Administration and Technology. Though there is no set formula to become a sports manager, I would recommend a Masters degree from a reputed institution, as it is a very young industry.

What’s your typical day like?

My day starts at about 07:30 with an alarm clock that snoozes till 8. Get ready by 09:00 and in the office by 09:15. The day ends at about 18:00-19:00. But this is a fairly new routine for me (3 months old) and it depends completely what you are working on. I have had work routines where my day started at 09:00 and ended at 19:00 the next day (34 hour work day). To be honest, there is no typical work day.

What did you do with your first paycheck?

My first paycheck was a modest one but I remember taking my family out and buying them gifts with it.

Name some joys of your profession.

As an individual who is passionate about sport, there are few things in life that come close to being “behind the scenes” of a major sports event. As an Indian, what joy could compare to working on the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup?

What makes you successful at what you do?

I believe that a simple motto that i follow has taken me very far in life “Everyday is a school day”. You learn something everyday and you have to welcome that with open arms.

Were you named after anyone?

No, and I prefer it that way.

What are some of your hobbies or passions?

I love to play sport but what I love more is to learn a new sport. Apart from that, I like to read and travel.

What is the most thrilling experience in your life?

The first time I sailed a boat during a massive storm in Lake Geneva.

What book are you reading right now?

The Olympic Turnaround by Michael Payne

What is your animal spirit? Why?

I would describe myself as a hare, somewhat comical but fast and cunning.
