Dav Pilkey, creator of the very popular ‘Captain Underpants’ graphic novels has written another hilarious and well-illustrated series, ‘Dog Man’. As is the case with all of Pilkey’s books, the cartoons and stories have been plotted out by his fictional duo – George and Harold. They are the minds behind ‘Captain Underpants’ and have now created the character of Dog Man.
Dog Man is a crime-fighting half dog-half human. Distracted at times by his dog instincts of chasing his tail, his super sniffing nose coupled with his human detective skills makes him an unlikely hero. He is created by doctors after a deadly explosion – when they decide to combine to head of a dog to the body of a man. For most parents, this fact would alone be off-putting enough to not buy the book for their children.
However, in classic Pilkey style, despite the jokes tilting towards the gross, the sense of humour coming through is amazing. The easy to read language and bright colours make this graphic novel a treat for children. Additional elements also include a flip-o-rama towards the end of the book and a tutorial on how to draw its main characters.
For children looking for a riotous, colour filled journey, this book is highly recommended.
