Great Stories for Children – Book Review

Great Stories for Children – Book Review

Ruskin Bond began his writing career at the age of 16, with the short story ‘Untouchable’. He has gone on since, to mesmerize readers with his idyllic descriptions of a quiet life in the hills. His work is deeply influenced by the life he has led living in the foothills of the Himalayas, weaving stories around his surroundings. The genre of his stories vary – though he writes for both children and adults; though he has maintained that short stories are his favourite.

‘Great Stories for Children’ is a wonderful manner in which to introduce a young reader who is unsure of whether or not they are fans of Ruskin Bond. The book gives readers a glimpse into Bond’s writing through 18 stories. It is a well-curated experience for children who are potentially interested in Bond’s writing.

The stories have been chosen with thought, traversing different subject matters and introducing readers to a myriad of characters. Children can laugh at the antics of the bothersome pret who troubles householders, shiver at the ghost stories and engage with adventurous children.

Bond’s ability to seamlessly include nature in his writing comes from his 60 years of experience as a well-respected author. For parents keen to introduce their children to this world, ‘Great Stories for Children’ is a good start.
