Imagine you find yourself trapped on an underwater alien planet, your life pod slowly sinking to the bottom of an unknown ocean. You have a limited supply of food and oxygen and the life pod has been damaged. Players have to gather together all the creativity and lateral thinking they have to survive in this unknown world. ‘Subnautica’ is a survival based game which has a multitude of narratives to explore. For example, one aspect of the game is the fact that your life pod is damaged. In order for it to function and for you to explore further, you have to collect resources from the ocean around you and repair the life pod. You can also expand and build bases on the sea floor based on the materials you can scavenge and the few that you have available.
The underwater water world in which the game is set is also a mystery. Through the course of the game, players can explore the unknown world, trying to gain knowledge about how it came to be the way it is. There are abandoned structures scattered throughout the ocean, the origins of which are unknown.
