Family Puppet Show

Parents often long for a summer break at the same time as their children. Some time to spend with them and catch up activities missed out in the year past. Weekends go by in a flash and it feels like you've managed to get in no time.

Before the summer is up, take out the time to spend with your children. Take those vacation days, even if you're only able to manage one at a time, and get in some time with your children. It will be a refreshing change for both parent and child, to get a mid-week treat when one or both of their parents are home.

Spending time with your child doesn't have to be limited to lazing in front of the television watching hours of animated television go by. It can be more interactive and meaningful than that, but that is in your hands. A wonderful way to engage with your child while working towards a larger project is preparing for a puppet show. You can span this activity over two days or pull it together in one – that choice is yours.

There are many different kinds of puppets you can make with your child. Unleash your inner artist and give them a chance to see your creative side as well, not limited to manic rushes to complete school projects the evenings before they are due.

Sock puppets are an easy way to re-use old socks which have either lost their twin or faded and torn. You can use craft items easily found in the house such as wool to make the hair, loose buttons stitched on to make the eyes and markers to add touches of colour and facial features.

Another interesting puppet can be made by recycling old cardboard tubes – the ones left over from toilet paper rolls and kitchen rolls. You can decorate the tube roll to look like the body and add arms and legs fashioned out of paper to attach to the roll.

Both of these types of puppets can be used in a puppet show, which you can perform along with your child. Make an evening out of it, inviting over friends or family. The importance you grant to the day as well as the appreciation you show to your child and their creativity go a long way in boosting their sense of self-confidence.
