‘The Boy and Dragon Stories and Other Tales’ comes from author Suniti Namjoshi, who previously brought us the popular ‘Aditi Adventures’. The stories bring to light the unlikely friendship between a boy and a dragon. The boy is initially tasked with punishing the dragon, but instead, the two become friends, embarking on adventures together. The stories echo the genre of magic realism, the adventures blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. The duo goes on many journeys together, intertwining different fantastical elements such a cricket playing giant and strong characters such as little girls who don’t understand why they have to cry.
The stories have been brought to life by the beautiful illustrations of artist Krishna Bala Shenoi. The choice of black, white and grey as the colour palette of the illustrations add a sense of gentleness to the narrative. The collection of stories gives us strong, yet soft characters, breaking out of traditional stereotypes of gender-bound character traits. Tulika Books brings us another sensitively created and thoughtfully executed series of stories, and is highly recommended for children and adults to read.
