Panchatantra: The Day Dreaming Priest

Panchatantra Stories | 3-12 yrs | Reading Pod

Here is another interesting story from the Panchatantra collection. Once upon a time, there lived a poor Brahmin by the name of Swabhavakripna in a village. He was very lazy and did not want to do any work. Instead, he always used to dream of being very rich.

One morning he got a pot of milk in alms. He took the milk to his home and added a little curd to that milk for converting the milk to curd. Then he lay down on his cot near the pot and started imagining what would happen once the milk turns into curd.

He soon fell asleep and dreamt that when the milk would turn into curd, he would churn out butter from it. Then he would further churn out some ghee from that butter. He further thought that he would sell the ghee in the market for a good amount of money. With that money, he would buy a hen. The hen would lay many eggs that would hatch very soon. He would then open a poultry farm of his own. This way, he would become the wealthiest man in the village in a short period of time. He would then marry a rich man’s good looking girl.

He continued dreaming that after marriage, he would have a kid and if he would do any mischief while growing up, he would take a stick and beat him. Dreaming like this, the Brahmin took a stick, swung it in the air and hit the pot of milk that was kept near him.

The pot broke and that whole milk spilt on the floor. The Brahmin woke up with the noise and was extremely saddened to see his dreams shattered with the pot before him.
