Hailing from a family of musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) learnt the harpsichord and violin from his father. After being orphaned at a young age, Bach was sent to the prestigious St. Michael’s School where he received a top-class education in music and other subjects. He began his career as an organist before beginning to compose music in a big way for choir, orchestra and solo instruments for the church and social settings. Although Bach was not responsible for introducing new forms of music, he enriched the already existing styles with his large volume of work.
