Sachin Tendulkar is an Indian cricketer and arguably the most masterful batsmen in international cricketing history. Dubbed the ‘Milestone Man’, he holds the most amount of records in the game of cricket. He is the only person to have scored a double century (200 runs) in a One Day International (ODI) match, he holds the record for the most runs scored in international test cricket with a tally of over 14,000 runs, and is the first person to score over 10,000 runs in the ODI category. Tendulkar has been awarded many accolades for his excellence in his sport including the Padma Vibhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel award and is the only non-civilian to be given the title of Group Captain by the Indian Air Force.

Where did he grow up?

Tendulkar was born to humble beginnings in Mumbai. His father Ramesh was a Marathi novelist and mother Rajni was an insurance agent. When Sachin attended the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, a bowling camp headed by Australian pace bowler Dennis Lillee, Sachin was advised to focus on his batting technique instead. Sachin’s batting abilities were fine-tuned by his coach Ramakant Achrekar in Mumbai.

Coach Achrekar

A famous story about Sachin’s training is that Coach Achrekar would put a Re.1 coin on the top of the stumps behind Sachin when he practiced. The bowler who dismissed Sachin would get to keep the coin but Sachin stood his ground for the entire training session he was allowed to keep it for himself. He claims that the 13 coins he collected are amongst his most prized possessions.

International Cricketing Career

Sachin’s international cricketing career began at age 16 when he played a test series against Pakistan. Even though he did not score too well in the match, his team mates were impressed by his focus and dedication to the game. By the next year Sachin scored his first test century in international cricket.

Sachin as a captain

Although Sachin has set records in both test and one-day cricket, he did not fare too well as a captain. He has served as the captain of the Indian cricket team during two separate time periods, he declined when he was offered it the third time. However, he still plays an integral role in team strategy and is looked up to by all his teammates.

What are some of his achievements?

Sachin has received the Arjuna Award, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna from the government of India. He holds many records to his name, including being the only player to have scored a hundred international centuries and having the most number of runs in both Test Cricket and ODIs.
